A Clinical Evaluation of Fluconazole as a Single Dose Treatment for Vaginal Infections with Candida

Abstract
Fluconazole is a novel orally effective antifungal agent which is more potent than Ketoconazole. This clinical survey of effects of single 150 mg dose fluconazole treatment on vaginal candidiasis has been made on 30 patients who visited out-patient clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chung-Ang University Hospital from March 1990 to September 1990. Patients ranged from 23 to 57 years of age, the majority of patients(80%) were between 20 and 39 in age, and the most patients (78%) had from zero to two children. The most offending organism was Candida albicans(93%). Pruritus was the most frequent symptom and vaginal discharge was the most frequent sign. At end of therapy, symptoms of vaginal discharge, pruitus and burning/irritation were eliminated in 85%, 90% and 100% of patients, respectively. Elimination of signs such as discharge, vulva and vaginal erythema, excoriation and cervical erosion were noted in 93%, 87%, 50% and 83% of patient, respectively. The cure rate defined as negative culture, improved clinical symptoms and signs after treatment was 93% and the recurrent rate was 7%. There was no undesirable side effects in subjective symptoms and laboratory findings after single dose. This clinical findings suggest that a single dose therapy of fluconazole in highly effective regimen for patients with vaginal candidasis.
